This is a common problem and lots of people are facing it these days. I have seen many people asking these questions on forums. So thought it would be good to write a post on it. Rather than writing reply each time on forums, I will just give them a link to this post and a download link for the fix.

Basically what happens, one fine day you discover that all files’ association has changed. The file type has changed without you doing anything to them. When you look closely at the files, the extension of all files have changed to .lnk! Obviously you would not be able to run those programs whose extension has changed to .lnk.
